How to Install Figma on Windows (Desktop App & Browser) 2026
Figma is available on Windows in two ways: as a dedicated desktop app or as a web application you run in your browser. Both give you access to the full Figma design tool — the difference is mainly in performance, font handling, and offline capability. This guide covers how to install both, what to do if the installation runs into errors, and which version is right for you.
Option 1: Install the Figma Desktop App on Windows
The desktop app is the recommended way to use Figma on Windows. It’s faster than the browser version, supports local fonts automatically, and gives you better performance on large, complex files.
Step 1: Download Figma for Windows
- Go to figma.com/downloads
- Under the Desktop apps section, click Download for Windows
- This downloads a file called
FigmaSetup.exe(approximately 150–200MB)
Step 2: Run the Installer
- Open
FigmaSetup.exefrom your Downloads folder - Windows may display a User Account Control prompt — click Yes to allow the installation
- Figma installs automatically. There is no step-through wizard — it installs in the background and opens when ready
- You’ll see the Figma loading screen, then the login page
Step 3: Sign In or Create an Account
- Sign in with your existing Figma account (Google login or email/password)
- If you don’t have an account, click Create an account — the free Starter plan gives you 3 drafts and 3 projects
- Once signed in, you’ll land on the Figma home screen showing your recent files and teams
Step 4: Verify the Installation
- Open a new file: click New design file on the home screen
- Press T to activate the text tool — you’ll see all your local Windows fonts are already available
- Try drawing a rectangle (R) and a circle (O) to confirm everything is working
Option 2: Use Figma in a Web Browser (No Installation)
If you prefer not to install software — or you’re on a managed work machine where you can’t — Figma runs fully in your browser with no download required.
Supported browsers on Windows:
- Google Chrome (best performance, recommended)
- Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based, works well)
- Firefox (supported, but slightly slower)
How to start:
- Open your browser and go to figma.com
- Sign in or create an account
- Click New design file to start designing
Note: The browser version doesn’t automatically detect your local fonts. To use fonts installed on your Windows computer in the browser, you’ll also need to install the Figma Font Helper — see our font installer guide for full instructions.
Figma Desktop App vs. Browser: Which Is Better for Windows?
| Feature | Desktop App | Browser (Chrome) |
|---|---|---|
| Local fonts | ✅ Automatic | Requires Font Helper |
| Performance | Faster | Good for most files |
| Offline access | Limited (needs sync) | No offline access |
| Updates | Auto-updates | Always up to date |
| Installation required | Yes | No |
| Best for | Daily professional use | Occasional use / shared machines |
Recommendation: Install the desktop app if you use Figma regularly. Use the browser if you’re testing Figma for the first time or working on a locked-down machine.
Installing Figma on Windows 11
The process is identical for Windows 11. Figma’s desktop app runs natively on Windows 11 and supports:
- High-DPI / 4K displays (Figma scales correctly on all DPI settings)
- Multi-monitor setups
- Windows 11 snap layouts (you can snap Figma alongside other apps)
- Touch and stylus input on supported devices (Surface, etc.)
Silent / Offline Installation of Figma
For IT administrators deploying Figma across multiple Windows machines, Figma supports a silent install via command line:
FigmaSetup.exe /S
The /S flag runs the installer silently with no UI prompts. This is useful for:
- Corporate deployments via Group Policy or SCCM
- Mass provisioning of designer workstations
- Automated setup scripts
After a silent install, each user signs in to their own Figma account on first launch.
Updating Figma on Windows
The Figma desktop app updates automatically in the background. You’ll see a notification in the app when an update is available — click Restart to update to apply it immediately, or it will apply the next time you restart Figma.
To check your current version:
- Open Figma
- Click the Figma logo (top-left hamburger menu)
- Go to Help → About Figma

Figma is slow or laggy on Windows

- In Chrome (if using browser version): go to
chrome://settings/systemand ensure Use hardware acceleration when available is on - Close other memory-heavy apps while using Figma on large files
- If you have both integrated and dedicated GPU, ensure Figma is using the dedicated GPU: right-click
Figma.exe→ Run with graphics processor → your dedicated GPU
”Installation failed” or installer crashes
- Download a fresh copy of
FigmaSetup.exe— the file may have been corrupted during download - Temporarily disable antivirus and try again
- Make sure you have at least 500MB of free disk space
- Run the installer as administrator

This can happen if your browser’s cookies or security settings interfere.
Fix:
