Figma vs Canva (2026): Product UI or Marketing Graphics
Figma vs Canva in 2026: use Figma for product UI and handoff, Canva for social and decks. What overlaps, what does not transfer, and when to keep both.

Quick answer
Use Figma when the work is a product interface: components, states, prototypes, and a file engineers can inspect. Use Canva when the work is a social post, a deck, a one-off ad, or a template a non-designer will edit. They overlap on simple graphics. They do not replace each other. Canva will not become your design system, and Figma is a clumsy place to run a weekly social calendar. If the real question is “which UI tool instead of Figma,” start with the alternatives shortlist. Who this is for
- Founders who were told Canva is “Figma but easier.”
- Marketing teams who already publish in Canva and just inherited a product screen.
- Product designers asked to move the app, or the brand system, into Canva.
This is not a verdict on Affinity. Canva replaced Affinity Designer, Photo, and Publisher with one desktop app, Affinity, that keeps vector, photo, and layout as studios inside that app. It is still separate from the Canva editor. It does not turn Canva into a multiplayer product file.
Criteria at a glance
| Criterion | Figma | Canva |
|---|---|---|
| Primary artifact | Frames, components, prototypes | Finished graphics and decks |
| Who edits it daily | Product designers and the engineers who inspect the file | Marketers, founders, and anyone using a template |
| Design system | Components, variants, variables | Brand kit: colors, fonts, logos |
| Handoff to engineering | Dev Mode on a prepared file | An exported image, not a component API |
| Social and ads | Possible, with more setup | The default job |
| Presentations | Possible. See slide decks in Figma | The default job for non-designers |
| Where it fails | A 15-post social week maintained by people who do not want a component panel | A product UI with states, responsive layout, and a real handoff |
When Canva is the right tool
Pick Canva when the published thing is a graphic, not a product.
- Social posts, stories, and ad sizes that repeat every week.
- Pitch decks and internal presentations edited by people who are not designers.
- A brand kit of logo, colors, and fonts that marketers apply to templates.
- One-off flyers, event assets, and simple documents.
Canva’s value is the template and the person who is not a product designer. If that person has to learn auto layout, variants, and Dev Mode, you have chosen the wrong tool for them.
When Figma is the right tool
Pick Figma when someone will build what you drew.
- App screens, marketing-site structure that engineers will implement, and design-system components.
- States: empty, error, loading, disabled, hover. Canva templates rarely model these as a system.
- A file more than one designer maintains, with libraries and review comments on the frames.
- Handoff. Spacing, type, and components need to survive contact with code. The checklist is Dev Mode for designers.
If the page is a marketing site a designer will publish without engineering, the choice is not Canva. Read Figma vs Framer.
What does not transfer
Export the assets you need and rebuild. Do not expect a Figma component, variant, or variable to arrive in Canva as a system, or a Canva template to arrive in Figma as a library.
| Moving | What you actually get |
|---|---|
| Figma frame → Canva | An image or a layout you recreate. The component set stays in Figma. |
| Canva template → Figma | A picture of a design, or loose elements. You still build the components. |
| Brand colors and logos | Worth copying into both brand kits. Names will not match. |
| Prototypes and interactions | Stay in Figma. Canva is not the prototype. |
| Developer specs | Stay in Figma. An exported PNG is not a spec. |
Banners and social crops are the exception that is still manual. If the source of truth is Figma, export from stable frames. See design a banner in Figma and production-ready export.
Use both, with one owner each
Many teams should keep both.
- Figma owns the product UI and the brand source designers maintain: type, color, components.
- Canva owns the social calendar and decks that marketers edit without opening the design system.
Write down which file wins when a color changes. If both files are “the brand,” they will diverge in a month. A practical rule: designers change the Figma library, then someone updates the Canva brand kit. Marketers do not edit product components in Canva to “save a step.”
Common mistakes
- Redesigning the app in Canva because a stakeholder likes the templates.
- Keeping the social calendar in Figma so every caption waits on a designer.
- Calling a Canva brand kit a design system. A kit is colors, fonts, and a logo. A system is components and states.
- Migrating the product library because a slide said Canva is cheaper. License lines are not delivery time. Check each vendor’s current plan. This guide does not list prices.
- Treating Affinity as the Figma replacement. It is a different desktop app, not the Canva editor.
FAQ
Can Canva replace Figma for UI design?
No, if UI means a product with components, states, and engineering handoff. A Canva mockup of an app is a picture. It will not survive a sprint.
Can Figma replace Canva for social media?
It can produce the pixels. It is a poor calendar. If non-designers publish every day, Canva (or another template tool) will get used whether or not you bless it. Give them a brand kit and keep product UI in Figma.
Is Canva a Figma alternative for a design team?
Only if the team does not design product UI. For a team that does, the serious foils are in the alternatives shortlist: Penpot for self-hosting, Sketch for a mac-native shop, Framer for the marketing site. Canva is a different job.
Bottom line
Canva publishes marketing graphics. Figma specifies product UI. Keep both when both jobs exist, and name which file owns the brand. If you are leaving Figma for another interface tool, Canva is the wrong exit. Read Figma vs Penpot next.
